Clearinghouse Purpose
To provide ND education consumers an overview of the online education organizations providing courses and instruction in North Dakota. The overview includes identification of online providers in North Dakota, types of courses provided, learning management system (LMS) compatibility, and costs, including course price and additional costs. Additional information is provided, as applicable and appropriate, to assist ND education consumers distinguish between technological innovation and learning innovation. NDCC: 15-19-02.1. Distance Education Clearinghouse
The director of the Center for Distance Education shall establish a clearinghouse for online courses delivered to North Dakota schools for the purpose of providing:
- A list of the online courses and providers for all North Dakota schools to access.
The list is available on the ND DPI website. - Awareness of online courses available in new and emerging careers.
NDCDE defines new and emerging careers as follows:
- New careers are jobs that have been created due to recent changes in society, technology, regulations, or markets. These roles did not exist before and have emerged to meet new needs and challenges. Emerging careers are jobs that currently have few workers but are expected to grow significantly in the future. These roles are in the early stages of development but show strong potential for expansion and increased demand.
- NDCDE classifies the following areas under this definition: Cybersecurity and Coding. These courses can be purchased in the Computer Education section of the CDE Store.
- Virtual CTE Centers may also offer these courses. A listing of these centers and links to their websites is available in this Area Career and Technology Centers document.

When purchasing online courses, schools must be aware of the scope of services included. More specifically, is the vendor providing content only or content and an instructor? This will determine the total cost of the course. The price list provides pricing for online courses offered through organizations and vendors commonly used in the state, delineating the scope of services provided. Technological Innovation
Technological innovation refers to the introduction and integration of new technologies or significant improvements in existing technologies to enhance educational processes and infrastructure. Examples include learning management systems (LMS), virtual reality (VR) tools, and adaptive learning software.
Learning Innovation
Learning innovation involves the development and implementation of new teaching methods, educational practices, and learning strategies to improve student outcomes. Examples include project-based learning, flipped classroom models, and personalized learning paths.
